Anzac Day.

“Those heroes who shed their blood and lost their lives … you are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no differences between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lay side by side here in this country of ours … You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway places, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace.

After having lost their lives in this land they have become our sons as well.”

Attributed to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Commander of the Ottoman forces at the Dardenells  in WW1 and later the founder of modern Turkey.

a bondi tram

There are some ancients amongst us who upon observing this pic may find an almost visceral pleasure at having been reminded how things were when we were young.

It’s not just the tram, it’s the familiar images of the buildings both near and far.
